Hometown Showcase at Career Fairs

At both the University of Dayton on Monday, February 22 and The Ohio State University on Wednesday, February 24, the R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase Trailer was available for tours and interactive experiences. Outside of UD Arena at the University of Dayton, attendees had the opportunity to learn about the logistics industry, the history of R+L Carriers and the many community projects we support. Although Wednesday was rainy at The Ohio State University, attendees still had the opportunity to tour the hauler outside the Ohio Union on campus.

Our Hometown Showcase team also had a booth inside at both career fairs to talk about the specifics of the career opportunities available at R+L Carriers.  Right now, there are approximately 146 available jobs within our company nationwide including:

Moving Into A Leadership Role

Moving Into A Leadership Role

By having a positive work ethic and being diligent in your performance you show a supervisor you are ready for a lead position.

If anyone knows about moving into a development leadership role, it’s Therese.  She’s been promoted to Software Developer Lead for R+L Carriers Operation Department, responsible for maintaining and supporting all of the company’s .NET applications.  In a nutshell, her leadership helps ensure freight moves from one location to another. We sat down with Therese to learn more about her growth within the company and as a developer over her tenure at R+L Carriers. Here’s her advice to new developers.

Seeking Advancement as a .NET Developer

leadership

If anyone knows about moving into a development leadership role, it’s Therese.

Therese advises applicants to seek a company that will work with you to advance your skills and encourage you to learn.  Once you’re in the position, ask questions of your peers to get assistance when you are adjusting to the new position. Consider a promotion plan and develop that plan through the following strategies:

  1. Try to develop a mentor relationship with someone in your department that is established in their position.
  2. Keep a journal of all your projects that you do or work on that helps the company. This can be creative and innovative but should pertinent to you and your commitment to the company.
  3. Acquire new knowledge and skills in an ongoing basis. Expand your knowledge in your skill set but also reach out and keep up on the industries latest’s trends.
  4. Keep a professional attitude at all times by being dependable, cooperative and punctual.
  5. Be a problem-solver, even if it means asking questions. Better to get it right in the beginning then have to spend additional time that could have been prevented.
  6. If you feel that you can handle more responsibilities ask your supervisor for additional work. This will not only help you expand your skills but will let management know you can handle the additional workload.

Leadership Requires Focus

To stay focused it’s helpful to review projects daily and compile completed tasks and items that still need to be completed. Once you’re in a leadership role this habit will be vital to keeping your team on task.

Ask yourself:

  1. What has been completed?
  2. What is left to do on the project?
  3. What open questions do the stakeholders or team member have?
  4. What is the goal?

As a lead you should know the answers to these questions when asked.  This will enable you to answer questions as they come up and stay on top of the status from all team members. Checking with management on a regular basis will keep your team moving forward on the project and keep the project in scope.

Communicate, then Communicate Again

Communication is a key aspect of being in any type of lead role.  No matter how much you may already be communicating, remember it’s still probably not enough. When a problem occurs be sure to listen effectively and work with that team member in finding the solution.  Remember that at one point you may have had the same problems they are having now.

By having a positive work ethic and being diligent in your performance and getting along with other members in and out of your department, you show a supervisor you are ready for a lead position.
