Hometown Goes Out West

Published: | Author: HometownAuthor

The R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase headed west during the first week of November, traveling to three area high schools in three days. Elsinore High School, Lakeside High School, and Temescal Canyon High School all experienced the Hometown Showcase and learned more about the logistics industry.

Classroom Presentations

R+L representatives started the day bright and early with the California sunrise, which was beautiful by the way. Check out our pictures on Facebook and Instagram. Our presentations incorporated the definitions of logistics, transportation, and supply chain. We talked to students about how their life would be different without all three. Some students were surprised that without logistics and transportation, many of the clothes and accessories they love would not be able to make it to them for purchase.

Interactive Hauler

Our 53-foot interactive hauler gave students the opportunity the experience the logistics industry up close. Inside the trailer, students could watch up to 11 HD displays about the various career opportunities with R+L in the shipping industry, as well as see some of the additional work that R+L does in the community through the Lima Company Memorial and the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Always one of the favorite parts of the trailer on every stop is the technologically advanced Bose Ride seating simulator, which gives riders a chance to feel what it’s like to be behind the wheel at R+L Carriers as a driver.

R+L Carriers presented Tim Taylor of Springfield High School in Dayton, Ohio with the R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase Achievement Award Oct. 21.

Coach Shuman told R+L Carriers that he chose Taylor for the award because he has dealt with a lot of adversity in his life while maintaining his grades and being a top athlete with a great attitude.

“Tim met all the qualifications and then some,” Shuman said. “He’s been through some hardships in his life but he doesn’t let anything get him down.”

Shuman said Taylor is consistently one of his “top three runners” on the Springfield High Cross-Country Team.

Taylor’s local community service work includes volunteering at the local Soup Kitchen. Taylor is also a member of his high school’s Key Club and the Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC). In his spare time, he plays in a local Frisbee sport league.

“Tim is an all-around great kid,” Shuman said.

Taylor intends to join the National Guard once he graduates and has long-term goals of becoming a police officer.

“I was shocked and honored to receive the award,” Taylor said. “It means a lot.”

The last two weekends of October took Hometown Showcase to two Ohio high schools. During our time at these schools we discussed transportation and logistics careers with students, had fun tailgating at football games, and gave awards to deserving students.

Springfield High School

Our Hometown Showcase team spent October 21st with the students at Springfield High School. Students were able to get a first-hand look at the logistics industry when our team gave a brief classroom presentation on the logistics/transportation industry and how it impacts daily life. After the presentation, students took a tour of our 53-foot interactive hauler, where they learned specifically about the logistics opportunities R+L Carriers has to offer.

The Hometown crew stayed around for the football game that night, when Springfield hosted Wayne in a big time Ohio High School Football matchup. Wayne defeated Springfield 38 -14. Before the game, our team presented Springfield student, Tim Taylor, with the R+L Carriers Hometown Student Achievement Award.  We also awarded a $1,000 scholarship to the school on behalf of Hometown Showcase to be presented to a deserving graduating senior at the end of the school year.
