Journey to 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade

munford band rose bowl parade

The Hometown Showcase and R+L Carriers were proud to be the official transportation provider for The Munford High School Band and their march to Pasadena, California.

Meeting in Munford

We first met the Munford High School marching band in September of 2018 when the Hometown Showcase took a trip to Munford High School. It was here that members of the R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase team shared exciting careers in transportation and logistics with Munford students, and the possibility of being the official transportation provider for the Munford Band was first discussed. Hundreds of bands from around the country apply to perform in the parade and the application process is in-depth. Through much communication and careful planning, our discussions soon became reality.

The March to Pasadena, California

Transportation for the equipment and uniforms was covered by R+L Carriers, but the students and their fans traveled by plane to California. As if there wasn’t enough stress involved in getting over 200 band members, their equipment, and their fans ready to play an event over 1900 miles from home, Mother Nature delivered some inclement weather and half the band ended up getting stuck at a Texas airport. Thankfully, a little December storm couldn’t keep this band from making it to the Rose Bowl Parade in time!

130th Tournament of Roses

On New Year’s Day, the entire band and all their equipment had arrived safely and they were ready to march, but there was one more unexpected event! Toward the end of the parade, the Rose Bowl float directly in front of the band started to smoke and quickly caught on fire!  Although no one was hurt, emergency vehicles were called in and the extra time needed to clear the disabled float nearly kept Munford from being in the televised broadcast.  As the saying goes, “All’s well that ends well.”   At the very end of the broadcast, the Munford Band took to the streets of Pasadena for the 2019 Rose Bowl Parade. We know there were plenty of parents, grandparents, band supporters and friends breathing a sigh of relief when their band finally appeared.

R+L Carriers is proud to have presented Kelli U. of McClain High School in Greenfield, Ohio with the Hometown Showcase Achievement Award on October 5. Kelli, a senior at McClain High School was nominated by McClain High School Principal Jason Potts. She was presented with the award at the Friday night football game after our team was able to interact with students around logistics career opportunities in the classroom. After the presentations to students, we blocked off the streets, rolled in our interactive hauler for the community, and had some Hometown Showcase fun!

Mr. Potts told us that he nominated Kelli as she is an excellent student, student-athlete, and all-around great young lady. He also informed us that Kelli represents McClain High School exceptionally in her various school affiliations.

Kelli is involved in several extracurricular activities such as soccer, basketball, and FFA, and she was named Team Captain of the McClain Lady Tiger Varsity Soccer Team.

“Obtaining this [Team Captain] position has allowed me to successfully lead my team to our greatest potential”, Kelli told us.

She is also a member of the National Honor Society, where members of this nationwide organization are selected based on their scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

McClain High School senior Kelli U. was awarded the R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase Achievement Award.

Kelli credits her leadership skills largely to participating in the McClain High School FFA program. She told us that public speaking was a weakness during her freshman year and the thought of giving a speech in front of 25 of her classmates was daunting. After three years of hard work, Kelli stood in front of 600 FFA members and guests and delivered a speech on the topic of leadership at an FFA banquet for her chapter. She credits learning from those closest to her with teaching her how to be a leader.

“Above all, Kelli has high integrity”, McClain High School principal Jason Potts added.

Supporting Local Communities

Published: | Author: HometownAuthor

Supporting local communities is a driving force behind the mission of the R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase. During the months of April and May, our recruiting team went to several community events to showcase logistics career opportunities.

R+L Carriers Boston Terminal

In April we visited our terminal in Boston, MA where employees there were able to tour the hauler.

It’s always a pleasure to reward our employees, and in April we visited our terminal in Boston, MA where employees there were able to tour the hauler. They were also able to have some fun and play corn hole to win prizes. Our Hometown Showcase staff always comes equipped with t-shirts, footballs, and stadium seats to give away! Some employees even brought their family members to the terminal to tour the hauler too! You can view available positions in Boston on our Career Site.

Newark, NJ Open House

Our Newark, NJ terminal was also the recent location for an R+L Carriers Open House. Community members were able to talk with recruiters about career opportunities at the terminal. Touring the hauler also gave potential employees an inside look at the technology used inside the hauler and throughout the logistics industry. View open positions in Newark on our Career Site.

East End Elementary in Wilmington, Ohio

The main attraction for the East End students was definitely the Bose Ride simulator.

Students are never too young to learn about logistics. East End Elementary is located in our local community of Wilmington, OH, and our team had a great day with the Pre-K students. Our hauler was a perfect representation of the transportation unit they had been studying. The main attraction for the students was definitely the Bose Ride simulator that gave them a sense of what it’s like to be an actual truck driver. We are certain that we interacted with a few future truck drivers.

Clinton Massie Career Day

Located about 20 minutes from our headquarters in Wilmington, OH, our team traveled to Clinton Massie Middle School for Career Day. Middle School students enjoyed a presentation on how the logistics industry impacts their lives in a variety of ways. Students may not have been familiar with the term logistics, but when we showed them examples, they recognized its importance. After the presentation, students then toured our interactive hauler to get hands-on experience of the industry. Many students were given t-shirts and footballs as a reminder of their fun day learning about the logistics industry.

Touch a Truck

At each Touch A Truck event, kids and their families were able to interact with various vehicles like fire trucks, police cars, helicopters, and of course the R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase hauler.

It’s important for the next generation of logistics professionals to understand the role of trucking in our economy. Even though there are various careers in logistics, the backbone of the industry is the trucks moving freight. Our team attended two “Touch A Truck” events in Jamestown and Hamilton County. At each event, kids and their families were able to interact with various vehicles like fire trucks, police cars, helicopters, and of course the R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase hauler. Everyone in attendance had the opportunity to tour our hauler and win prizes.  Those who wanted to learn about career opportunities were able to talk to our recruiters as well.

Investing in Technology

Published: | Author: HometownAuthor

Technology is a driving force in the logistics industry and it is undeniable that we must invest in students, the next generation who will lead freight logistics and supply chain management. During the months of April and May, our recruiting team visited multiple technical colleges across the nation. Our goal was to educate students about technology-centric career fields at R+L Carriers.

Universal Technical Institute – Boston

Universal Technical Institute is an Automotive & Diesel Technical School. We visited the Norwood, Massachusetts campus to discuss automotive career opportunities available at the R+L Carriers Service Center located in neighboring Canton and around the country. Following the information session, students toured the interactive trailer and continued discussing logistics technology career opportunities.

Laurel Oaks

Laurel Oaks, located in our Hometown of Wilmington, Ohio, specializes in technical education for both high school and adult students.  We had a blast with the high students and were thrilled to see their interest in mechanic and technology careers. The opportunity to interact with students in the classroom and at the hauler was exceptionally valuable. It was also thorough with the assistance of R+L Carriers employees who were on-site to provide a candid perspective of various technology career fields within the logistics industry.

Lincoln Tech – Nashville

The Hometown Showcase hauler is no stranger to the Lincoln Technology campus located in Nashville, Tennessee. It is always an exciting time to visit the staff and students at this automotive college, which features real-world training facilities.  Over 400 students toured the hauler and interacted with our staff.  After looking inside the hauler and speaking with our recruiters, students were eager to apply for mechanic careers at R+L Carriers.

UNOH Career Fair

Founded in 1920, the University of Northwestern Ohio located in Lima, Ohio is one of the top diesel mechanic schools in the country. We parked our interactive hauler outside of the career center and set up a table inside so students could easily access our team to ask questions and enter a drawing to win $50 gifts cards for industrial tools manufacturer, Snap-on.

Technology will continue to be a critical part of the logistics industry and R+L Carriers will continue to educate students about the various career opportunities. If you are interested in the Hometown Showcase visiting your school or institution, contact us today!

Committed to Educating Students of all Ages

Published: | Author: HometownAuthor

Inspired by recent school visits within our hometown of Wilmington, Ohio, we were reminded of our key foundation. R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase is committed to educating and providing opportunities within the transportation and logistics industry to students of all ages, nationwide.

East End Elementary

Pre-K students at East End Elementary were learning about transportation and roads in class, so when the teachers called us to ask if we would give their students an interactive experience of transportation on the road, we said: “let’s do it!” The teachers told us the students were bursting with excitement before we arrived; the classes erupted with joy when they saw the first truck (a milk truck), through the classroom window. Finally, we arrived and their expressions were priceless! Of course, each of the students wanted to be first to ride the Bose Ride simulator. They had a blast imagining what it is like to be on the road as a truck driver. Prepared with questions, the students were curious about the types of food that drivers eat, where they sleep, and if they can bring their favorite pets on the road.

Educating students in the East End Pre-K classes was fun for our team and we appreciate the students for their enthusiasm for transportation.

Laurel Oaks Career Campus

This was our first time visiting Laurel Oaks, which is a satellite campus of Great Oaks. The first thing that caught our eye was their vision statement which we immediately connected with. “Providing innovative career training to empower individuals and communities”. The transportation and logistics industry is full of innovative career opportunities and R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase is constantly striving to empower individuals and communities across America through education initiatives.

“I just wanted to thank you again for taking the time to visit our campus. Our students were excited about the opportunity to experience the activities in the truck. I hope we can work together in the future to benefit R&L and the students at Laurel Oaks.”

– Kevin E. Abt, Dean of Instruction Laurel Oaks Career Campus

Our recruiting team spent time with the Mechanics and Technology division and everyone enjoyed a classroom presentation regarding career opportunities that exist within the logistics industry. Those studying to be diesel mechanics were able to speak with R+L Carriers Mechanics, who were also in attendance, and students studying technology explored varies career paths in logistics, including:

Laurel Oaks students toured our hauler to learn more about the logistics industry and heard a presentation about logistics career opportunities.
