Hometown Showcase Travels to the West Coast to Talk Mechanic Careers

Published: | Author: HometownAuthor

The R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase traveled to the West Coast to visit automotive technical schools and area R+L Carriers Service Centers. Our goal was to provide current automotive students the opportunity to spend time with R+L Carriers recruiters and mechanics as well as show appreciation for our customers and employees. Many diesel mechanic students wonder what it will be like to work for a large transportation company like R+L Carriers, and we’re there to help.

Check out the many opportunities for diesel mechanic jobs at R+L Carriers if you’d like to learn more too!

Here’s a wrap up of our time on the west coast.

Universal Technical Institute (UTI)

Our team visited two Universal Technical Institute campuses in Phoenix, AZ, and Sacramento, CA. The core programs at UTI include Automotive, Diesel, and Welding. The school has made a name for themselves in the transportation industry boasting 12 total campuses across the U.S. and 200,000 graduates in over 50 years. Our mechanics and recruiters talked to students about the transportation industry and career opportunities at R+L Carriers Service Centers near their campus. Students in Sacramento had the opportunity to meet and talk to our Sacramento Service Center Shop Foreman and UTI – Sacramento graduate, Johnny.  Shop Foreman is a supervisor position in the mechanic field, so it was great for students to see the career path and career opportunities for mechanics at R+L Carriers.

For more than 45 years, AAI has been a resource for students from all backgrounds to become certified in automotive careers.  Our mechanics and recruiters wanted to make this visit beneficial to the students, so we shared the ins and outs of being a mechanic in the transportation industry.

Portland Automotive College

Diesel Day at Portland Community College promotes hands-on learning sessions for students who wish to find out what today’s Diesel Technicians do in the field. The R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase participated this year and it was great to see so many students interested in learning more about becoming a diesel technician. Students were able to tour our interactive hauler to learn more about R+L Carriers and the transportation industry as well as talk to our mechanics and recruiters about mechanic careers. Bennett, a new mechanic at R+L Carriers and current Portland Community College student attended the event as well as Shop Lead Kris. Lebanon City Schools Answer the Call to Serve Community

Published: | Author: HometownAuthor
Lebanon Ohio

Students ranging in age from elementary school to high school spent two weeks collecting food and non-perishable items for the Lebanon Food Pantry, a tradition of Lebanon City Schools for many years.

The words are proudly displayed in their school logo; “Building Community.” And that’s just what Lebanon City Schools in Lebanon, Ohio recently accomplished by collecting and donating 5,140 pounds of food and personal items to the Lebanon Food Pantry.

Lebanon City Schools

On Friday, February 23, Lebanon City Schools located in Lebanon, Ohio wrapped up their annual food drive for the local food pantry. Students ranging in age from elementary school to high school spent two weeks collecting food and non-perishable items for the Lebanon Food Pantry, a tradition of Lebanon City Schools for many years. Ashley W., now a junior at Lebanon High School and a member of the Captain’s Council, has been donating food since the first grade. As one of the leaders of the food drive, she wanted to give back to everyone and not just people she knows on a personal basis.

Ashley reminded us, “If we can each give one or two cans it helps tremendously throughout the community.”

Bill Stewart, Athletic Director, is one of the administrators involved with organizing the food drive. He helped coordinate the various student groups including the Captains Council, Student Council, National Honor Society, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, to take leadership roles in this district-wide initiative.

So why not donate around the holidays like so many other organizations? Mr. Stewart explains,

“There are a lot of donations around Christmas and Thanksgiving and then things seem to die down after that. I think we were able to fill a nice void for them [Lebanon Food Pantry].”

His message to all students – answer the call to service!

For the entire food drive, students packed donations into an empty trailer parked outside the high school. On delivery day, the remaining donations were packed up and the trailer and caravan of volunteers made their way to the Food Pantry. There, they enthusiastically unpacked and carried in the donations.

Tom Davidson, President of the Lebanon Food Pantry expressed his appreciation.

“When you look at the school system, because that’s the only people that we actually serve, about 42 percent of children in the Lebanon School District receive some type of supplemental aid, and we are part of that.”

On a heavy day at the pantry, 40 clients come through the doors. Open only 3 days a week, volunteers at the pantry are vital to its success. The pantry was formed by 13 original churches in the area and those churches are still a part of its operation.

The R+L Carriers Hometown Showcase is astounded by the work of the Lebanon City School students for helping to fill a need in the local community. We like to say the Hometown Showcase delivers opportunities, but this time students were the ones delivering opportunities to families in the community, and we’re here to cheer them on!

If you are interested in answering the call to serve at the Lebanon High School, talk to a school administrator or a student currently involved. To help the Lebanon Food Pantry, call (513) 932-3617 for more details.

Hometown Showcase Travels to Missouri

Published: | Author: HometownAuthor

One of the perks of working in the Logistics industry is that you can take advantage of its skillsets at any time! At R+L Carriers, we believe in investing into a variety of candidates, such as high school, college, and trade school students, many of whom are at different stages in their life.

The Hometown Showcase hauler traveled all the way to Missouri to talk to the students of Crowder College and McDonald County High School on Sept. 28 and 29. With two of our Service Centers stationed in Missouri, we wanted to capitalize on the opportunity to introduce these students to an important industry that provides a variety of options for their future right in their backyard.

Crowder College

On Sept. 28, the Hometown Showcase team set up the hauler in front of Crowder College in Neosho, MO for students to interact with and get hands-on experience. From looking at the engine of the hauler to interacting with different portions inside the trailer like the Bose Seating simulation, students had a great time learning about the different positions that R+L Carriers has to offer. After this visit, many applications were filled out.

McDonald County High

Since Crowder College is a community college, students consist of both college and high school students. The next day, the hauler drove down the street to hang out and talk logistics with the high school students of McDonald County High in Anderson, MO.

At R+L Carriers, we strive to provide students with the knowledge of a career that has many options.

At R+L Carriers, we strive to provide students with the knowledge of a career that has many options.

We understand that some students in high school have not selected a career path yet. At R+L Carriers, we strive to provide those students with the knowledge of a career that has many options. The logistics industry is vital to the function of our everyday life. The industry also shows no signs of a decrease in growth. There are plenty of jobs available for those with a variety of different skillets.

During the school day, The Hometown Showcase team gave a presentation to each class about logistics and its impact on our everyday life. The students also had a chance to interact with the hauler and see the exciting parts of the company with hands-on experience. Students also applied for R+L Carriers’ positions at the event.  Later that night, The Hometown Showcase hauler parked at the football game, where the McDonald County Mustangs beat the Monett Cubs 21-18 in a close and exciting game. The fans at the game got to enjoy the game and interact with the trailer.

Bucky H., was the winner of the Hometown Achievement Award, received before the game.

It wasn’t only the win that made this evening so great, but The Hometown Showcase team also got a chance to donate $1,000 to McDonald County High School and present a $1,000 scholarship to a student of the school’s choice.  Bucky H., the winner of the Hometown Achievement Award, received the award before the game. Congratulations, Bucky!

Our visits to Crowder College and McDonald County High School were full of fun and logistics. We always enjoy educating students about the industry and what it has to offer. Are you interested in the Hometown Showcase coming to your school or next community event?
