R+L Carriers was proud to sponsor Hillsboro’s first “Smokin’ in the Hills BBQ Cook-off.” To show our support, the Hometown Showcase hauler traveled with the Lima Company Eyes of Freedom hauler to Rocky Fork Lake in Hillsboro, Ohio on Friday, Sept. 22. The two haulers made their entrance behind a truck and motorcycle convoy on Friday night in preparation for the event, which aims to support U.S. Armed Forces, firefighters, police officers, and first responders—all of our loved ones in service.
Hometown Showcase Smokin’ in the Hills
Although it was early on Saturday morning when all the fun began, the weather was hot and sunny and made for a perfect day for games, giveaways, and barbecue. The Hometown Showcase hauler provided music and entertainment all day. Since it was a college football Saturday, The Ohio State football game was displayed on the Hauler’s two outdoor televisions for fans that wanted to keep up with the action. The Hometown Showcase also provided games such as Corn hole and the football toss to give visitors a chance to win stadium seats, T-shirts, mini footballs and blankets.
Smokin’ in the Hills Patriot Challenge
Early Saturday morning, more than 100 attendees registered for the Patriot Challenge, an obstacle course designed to test the strength and endurance of the teams. The partners began the race with a half-mile run, moved onto a quarter-mile canoe stretch and ended after enduring six obstacle challenges before reaching the finish line.
The Eyes of Freedom Hauler set up their portraits for all to see. Their memorial honors the service and sacrifice of all who answer our nation’s call; then, now, and tomorrow. This provided an interesting exhibit to look at and pay tribute to the fallen while the teams were cooking their barbecue. In addition to the Eyes of Freedom memorial, many other military and veteran exhibits were at the event. The day was full of honor for veterans, current military members, and first responders…and of course barbecue.
Smokin’ in the Hills BBQ Cook-off
Throughout the day, 25 teams from four states prepared their best brisket, chicken, ribs and pork recipes for the barbecue competition. Although the competition was fierce, it was Elegantly Violent from Grove City, Ohio that came out on top to win the $1,300 grand prize. It was their pork ribs recipe that put them on top and helped them secure the Grand Champion win. As the official sponsor, R+L’s very own presented the check to the winners of the competition.
